Want That Gorgeous Holiday Bokeh with Your Camera Phone?

Ever wondered how to get that soft, glowing blur of light (a.k.a. bokeh) in your pictures? Don’t worry, you don’t need a fancy camera. Your phone can absolutely do the job!

The holidays are here, and you know what that means: twinkling lights, cozy vibes, and the perfect backdrop for dreamy photos.

Ever wondered how to get that soft, glowing blur of light (a.k.a. bokeh) in your pictures? Don’t worry, you don’t need a fancy camera. Your phone can absolutely do the job!

Let’s break it down so you can snap those magical shots like a pro.

Step 1: Find Your Sparkle

Bokeh magic happens when there’s a light source in the background. Holiday string lights, candles, a glowing Christmas tree, these are your best friends. The more lights, the better!

Step 2: Create Some Depth

Bokeh works when your subject is up close to the camera, and the lights are farther away in the background.

For example, hold a mug of hot cocoa or have a friend pose about 4 feet from the lights. Make sure there’s more space between your subject and the lights than between you and your subject. This creates the space needed for that dreamy blur.

Step 3: Switch to Portrait Mode

Most smartphones have a portrait mode (sometimes called “Live Focus” or “Depth Effect”). Turn that on! It’s designed to blur the background and make your subject pop. And that’s exactly what we want for the bokeh to appear!

Step 4: Focus on the Details

Tap on your screen to focus on your subject (the person, mug, or whatever you’re highlighting). Your camera will adjust the background to get that delicious blur of lights.

Pro tip: If the bokeh isn’t strong enough, move your subject closer to the camera and make sure the lights stay further away.

Step 5: Experiment and Have Fun

Play around with angles and distances to see what works best.

This season, take a second to capture the twinkle around you. Whether it’s your tree, your people, or just a quiet moment with a candle, bokeh adds a little sparkle to the everyday.

Tag me in your holiday bokeh shots! I’d love to see the magic you create!

Let’s Talk Props, Models, and Backgrounds 🧐

Here’s how I help my clients navigate these choices to create images that truly resonate:

When it comes to brand photography, there’s a lot more happening behind the scenes than you might think. It’s not just about pretty pictures. It’s about capturing the heart of your brand. And some of the biggest decisions in a photo session revolve around props, models, and backgrounds.

Here’s how I help my clients navigate these choices to create images that truly resonate:

👉 Props That Tell a Story

Props aren’t just decorations. They’re tools 🧰 for storytelling.

Whether it’s your product, tools of the trade, or lifestyle elements, they should reinforce your brand message.

For instance, a fitness coach might incorporate weights and fresh fruit, while a consultant might use clean, minimalist office elements.

👉 The Right Models Make a Difference

Models can bring your brand to life, but it’s about more than just appearance.

❓ Do they reflect your audience?
❓ Do their expressions and body language align with your message?

Whether it’s a team member or a professional model, we’ll make sure they embody your brand’s personality.

👉 Studio or On-Location?

Choosing the right backdrop is key.  🗝️

Studio shoots give us total control over lighting and environment, perfect for polished, professional looks. On-location shoots, on the other hand, add authenticity and a unique vibe. Together, we’ll decide what aligns best with your goals.

👉 Keeping It Simple with Props

Less is often more.

I help clients avoid prop overload by focusing on just a few key items that enhance the scene without stealing the spotlight.

👉 The Power of Backgrounds

A backdrop can set the mood in an instant. Whether it’s a clean white studio, a lush outdoor scene, or a cozy café, the background will work seamlessly with your brand’s identity.

These decisions aren’t just technical, they’re strategic. Every choice we make is a step toward creating brand photos that connect with your audience and tell your story in the most compelling way.

Let’s work together to bring your brand to life, one frame at a time!

Transforming Brand Photos into Signature Images

The discovery session is the heart of the process, where the dream comes alive and begins to take shape. Together we build a vision that is both authentic and impactful.

When it comes to a #brandphotography session, we often focus on the final images; but the real magic happens in the planning.

The discovery session is the heart of the process, where the dream comes alive and begins to take shape. Together we build a vision that is both authentic and impactful.

Here is a glimpse of a typical Discovery Session.

Goal: Understand the Client’s Needs: More Than Just Photos

For clients, the discovery session is a chance to bring more than just a list of “photo ideas.” It’s an opportunity to distill the #values, #messages, and #emotions that define the brand.

Start the conversation here:

1. Clearly Defined Target Audience

Think about what keeps your customers up at night or the qualities they appreciate in brands they follow.

Understanding who they are, what they value, and the problem you solve for your market helps me create the brand photos that resonate.

2. Clarify the Visual Brand

It’s the business’s “personality in pictures.” Polished and professional, or approachable and relatable? Maybe it’s somewhere in-between both?

These are tangible items, and the discovery session is where we unpack these traits. This process allows me to tailor each shot, each angle, each pose to echo your brand’s voice.

The Photographer’s Role: Guiding and Translating the Vision

It’s not just about setting up lighting or selecting backdrops.

It’s about listening closely to your desires, the goal for your photos. It’s understanding nuances, and helping you articulate ideas you may not even realize they have.

By asking questions like:

  • “How do you want people to feel when they see your photos?”

  • “What story do you want these images to tell?”

Answering these foundational questions will build a creative framework that aligns with the your goals. After that we can make informed choices around lighting, colors, poses, wardrobe, and composition.

It’s about choosing elements that reinforce the brand identity.

Ultimately, a successful brand photography session is a dialogue. When done well, these brand images serve as powerful tools, telling the brand’s story to the right audience, in all the right ways.

If you’re thinking about a brand photography session, know that I will make the most of that initial discovery meeting.

Cropping sizes - 1:1, 3/4, or Full-Length, and Why

Offering headshots in a variety of crops, 1:1, 3/4, and full-length, ensures my clients have the tools to connect meaningfully across different platforms and contexts.

When it comes to brand photography, versatility is key. 🗝️

Offering headshots in a variety of crops, 1:1, 3/4, and full-length, ensures my clients have the tools to connect meaningfully across different platforms and contexts.

Here’s 👇 how these formats can work for you:

1. 1:1 (Close-Up Headshots)

These are the gold standard for personal connection. A tightly framed shot of your face focuses on your expression, projecting approachability and confidence.

Whether it’s for LinkedIn, a website bio, or a digital business card, this format emphasizes your professionalism and draws viewers in for that “face-to-face” feel.

2. 3/4 (Waist-Up Shots)

This crop adds context to your presentation. 🤔

It’s ideal for highlighting your body language, showcasing a brand-relevant outfit, or creating a balance between formality and approachability.
Perfect for blog features, speaker profiles, or “about” pages, this shot is versatile while retaining a strong focus on you as the subject.

3. Full-Length Shots

Want to show a dynamic, active side of your brand? 💥

Full-length shots are often used to capture personality and setting. Whether it’s a modern, casual stance or a formal pose, these images are excellent for brochures, full-page ads, or event promotion. They give viewers a more complete impression of your professional presence.

Why This Matters

Having all 3 formats ready allows you to pivot effortlessly between platforms and contexts.

A LinkedIn recruiter might be drawn to your 1:1 headshot, while a 3/4 shot could make your business website feel warm and relatable. Meanwhile, full-length images are a great choice for marketing collateral that requires a more active or comprehensive brand story.

My clients appreciate selecting the formats that suit their unique goals. From planning to execution, we’ll create a portfolio of images that not only reflect your best self but also serve your brand’s diverse needs.

Why Wardrobe & Styling Matter in Brand Photography

What looks great in the mirror might not always translate to the camera, and what’s trendy may not always align with your brand values. During the discovery call we talk wardrobe and styling.

Choosing the right wardrobe for your brand photos can feel overwhelming.

What looks great in the mirror might not always translate to the camera, and what’s trendy may not always align with your brand values. During the discovery call we talk wardrobe and styling.

It’s not just about looking good—it’s about looking aligned.

Here are 4 ways wardrobe choices can elevate your brand photos:

1. Reinforces Brand Colors

Coordinating your wardrobe with your brand palette creates consistency across all visuals, from websites to social media.

2. Communicates Brand Personality

Your clothing tells a story. Whether it’s a tailored blazer that says “professional and polished” or a cozy sweater that says “approachable and warm,” wardrobe conveys who you are.

3. Aligns with Target Audience

Dressing in a way that resonates with your audience makes you relatable. For example, a creative entrepreneur might go bold, while a corporate executive might lean toward classic styles.

8. Balances Team Photos

If it’s a group shoot, coordinating wardrobes avoids clashing and ensures a unified look that reflects your brand.

By planning ahead, you’ll know exactly what to bring (and what to leave behind), making the shoot day smooth and enjoyable.

Wardrobe isn’t just an afterthought—it’s a vital part of creating brand photos that work as hard as you do. Together, we’ll plan a wardrobe that supports your goals and ensures you look and feel comfortable, authentic, and on-brand.

What’s your go-to style when you want to make a statement?

Struggling With Your About Page Without Sounding Boastful?

Here’s the reality: there’s a way to tell your story authentically without sounding like you’re just patting yourself on the back.

[How to leverage your About page for client growth]

Let’s face it—talking about your successes can be tricky. You want to share how you’ve overcome challenges and found solutions for your clients, but you don’t want to come off as self-centered.

Here’s the reality: there’s a way to tell your story authentically without sounding like you’re just patting yourself on the back.

Here are 3 strategies to help you strike the right balance:

1. Focus on the Impact, Not Just the Success

When you talk about your wins, frame them through the lens of the value you’ve provided to your clients or community. Instead of focusing solely on what you did, highlight how it benefited others. This shifts the focus from self-promotion to demonstrating the impact of your work. #BrandPhotos are a great way to tell this story.

2. Showcase Moments of Growth, Not Perfection

Nobody connects with perfection. Instead of glossing over the struggles, acknowledge them. Share moments of growth where you learned something valuable or had to pivot. These moments humanize your story and show that growth often comes through overcoming obstacles, making your audience trust you more. Keep it short and sweet, and remember to #ShowNotTell with #BrandPhotos

3. Use “We” and “Our” Instead of “I”

Your About page should reflect the collective effort behind your success. A simple shift from “I” to “we” and “our” shows that you’re part of a team, working together to solve problems. This not only makes you sound less self-centered but also highlights #collaboration and #teamwork, key values for many businesses. 🙌

Remember, you're not avoiding your achievements — you're telling the story. Pair your narrative with authentic brand photos that capture those moments of growth and collaboration for top shelf impact. That’s how you bring the story to life.

Ready to share your story with impact and authenticity? Let’s connect.

5 Ways to Demonstrate Expertise Without Confusing Your Reader

Clear communication isn’t about dumbing things down. It’s about making your expertise accessible.

You don’t have to sacrifice clarity to prove you know your stuff. In fact, the most impactful About pages are often the simplest. Aim to explain what you do as if you were talking to a friend; keep the words accessible and engaging,

Here are 5 ways to show your expertise while keeping things clear:

1. Break It Down 🧩

Complex ideas don’t need complex language. Break down industry terms into everyday words. Keep it simple, but powerful.

2. Use Analogies or Examples 👈

Analogies can bring abstract concepts to life. It helps readers grasp the concept quickly without feeling overwhelmed. Analogies are like bridges—they make your message easier to cross.

3. Focus on the Impact 🎯

Talk about the results. This keeps the focus on what matters most to your audience: the benefits they receive.

4. Speak Like You Would in a Conversation 😉

Write the way you talk. The more conversational your tone, the more approachable you seem. Imagine you’re explaining what you do over coffee. Keep it natural and direct.

And most importantly…

5. Show, Don’t Just Tell (With Brand Photos) 📸

Pair your explanations with visuals: #brandphotos that showcase your work in action. Visuals bring clarity and add authenticity to your story.

Clear communication isn’t about dumbing things down. It’s about making your expertise accessible.

Make your About page work for your audience, and they’ll likely hire you to work for them.

5 Ways to Use your About page to connect with Your Audience

Here are 5 simple and effective ways to get to know your audience better, and shape a tone that speaks directly to them, especially on your About page.

Knowing your audience is foundational to crafting messages that resonate. Yet we all make assumptions about what our audience wants. When you truly understand who you’re speaking to, every word, image, and story becomes that much more powerful for building a relationship with them.

Here are 5 simple and effective ways to get to know your audience better, and shape a tone that speaks directly to them, especially on your About page.

1. Engage in Active Listening 👂

Start by paying close attention to what your audience is already saying. Social media, reviews, and customer feedback are treasure troves of insights. Look for patterns in their questions, the language they use, and any recurring pain points. When you understand how they talk about their needs and challenges, you can mirror their language in your content, creating messages that feel like they were written just for them.

2. Talk with Your Existing Clients

Nothing beats a direct conversation. Set up coffee dates, online connecting, or send out surveys to get firsthand insight into your clients’ experiences. Ask them why they chose you, what they love about your product or service, and what you could do better. Their answers will reveal what they value most and help you create content that resonates on a personal level. Plus, these conversations deepen your relationship with current clients; they see that their opinions truly matter. That may lead to repeat business. 😁

3. Use Data to Spot Trends 📈

If you have website analytics, social media insights, or email open rates, put them to use. These numbers tell you which topics grab attention, where readers tend to lose interest, and even what kinds of #visuals get the most engagement. Pay attention to trends and patterns and fine-tune both the tone and content of your marketing materials based on what’s working. Then repeat it in 6-12 months time!

4. Observe Your Competitors (Strategically) 🧐

Keeping an eye on competitors doesn’t mean copying what they’re doing; it’s about why they might resonate. The goal is to stand out, not blend in, so think of it as an exercise in differentiating your voice in a way that speaks directly to your audience

5. Showcase Your Brand Story with Photos 📸

Words are powerful, and visuals tell a story all on their own. Including #brandphotos that show authentic images of your team, your process, and even your clients add a layer of relatability and trust. When potential clients go to your About page they see who you are and how you work, and they start to feel like they know you.

Together, we can choose photos that reinforce your values and mission, capture the moments that matter most, and attract the attention of your market.

These images will lead them to connect with your words and create a brand presence that feels genuine and accessible.

Final Thoughts

When you take the time to understand your audience, your messaging shifts from being “out there” to being “right here” with them.

Crafting an About page becomes less about promotion and more about connection. At last your About page speaks their language, resonates with their needs, and reflects the story only your #brand can tell.

Let’s build messages that connect with images that stop the scroll. Marketing isn’t about speaking at your audience; it’s about speaking with them.

Your ‘About’ Page Isn’t Just a Bio—It’s a Tool for Connection

Your audience wants to see the passion that drives you. They want to understand your values, your challenges, and most especially why you’re the right choice for them.

Let’s be real: When’s the last time an About page made you feel something?

If your About page reads like a corporate resume, you’re missing a chance to connect. 🤦‍♀️ People care more about people than they care about accolades or jargon. They care about the why behind your work. 💯

Here’s the truth: A strong About page is a powerful tool to #buildtrust. Your audience wants to see the passion that drives you. They want to understand your values, your challenges, and most especially why you’re the right choice for them.

And if you don’t share those things? They’ll go to the next brand that does.

Don't just tell your story—show it. 📸
Pair your words with visuals (#brandphotos) that let your audience see the humans behind your business.
➢ Brand photos of your team in action
➢ Behind-the-scenes moments

Anything that showcases your culture can turn a simple story into something relatable and personable . There's a sample of images below.

🎯 Here's the challenge: If your About page doesn’t feel authentic or if it doesn’t connect, you’re leaving value on the table. I can help you capture that authenticity with brand photos that make a real impact.

Ready to make your About page work for you?

Selfies With a Purpose?

Self-portraits can be a HUGE confidence booster! It’s not a selfie. Self-portraits are an intentional exercise to slow down and focus on YOU. When we take time to focus on ourselves, the rewards can be immediate and abundant, especially when it’s time for your own headshots and brand photos.

Self-Confidence increases with Self-Portraits

Lots of people feel nervous about getting in front of the camera?

Self-portraits are a fantastic way to:

  • build confidence

  • express your unique personality

  • get ready for your photo session

Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. **Find Your Light:** Good lighting makes all the difference. Natural light from a window is often the most flattering.

2. **Relax and Have Fun:** You have nothing to loose! Play some music, and enjoy the process. You’re out to have a good time!

3. **Experiment** Don’t be afraid to move around, try different poses, try cropping in tight. The more you experiment, the more you'll discover!

4. **Edit a few & be creative** Play with the editing tools on your phone. You’ll be amazed at what you can do!

Most of all, let your personality shine – whether that’s a big smile, a serious look, or something in between.

Remember, the goal is to capture your emotions and increase your confidence.

So grab your camera, take a deep breath, and have a little adventure!

We have so many facets to our lives, so many “hats” we wear. I met Rhonda when I was writing and speaking full time.

Atlanta Brand and Portrait Photographer

When Rhonda called to plan a date for coffee I had no idea all the things she wanted to chat about!

I met Rhonda when I was writing and speaking full time. As a literary editor she was at the top of my resource list. Her heart is for people, her skill is well honed, and her personality is delightful. As she told me about expanding her editing business to launching a podcast and a publishing company for self-publishing authors we both bubbled with joy!

It’s especially important for small business brand photography to always aim to show personality, passions, and professionalism in an authentic way. Solo-preneaurs and small businesses will attract their target market best when they connect with them through visual brand photos.

Having a digital drawer full of fresh, brand-centric photos can show off your secret sauce expertise, stand out in the crowded market, and connect with more of your customer/clients. Brand photos are great for all your online platforms and in print needs.

How we see the world around us depends on what’s inside us;

Daliah underneath.jpg

“We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”

Anaïs Nin

Most of my life I’ve struggled with an attitude of lack. I’ve always set standards for myself to reach, to always be improving. Questioning if:

  • I’m smart enough.

  • I’m successful enough.

  • I’m friendly enough.

In the margin of my bibles are endless questions:

  • Where is my heart not aligned with Jesus’s heart?

  • Where is my attitude still willful, self-serving?

  • Where am offended?

Taking creative photos means learning to see in new ways. Looking for new angles, paying attention to backgrounds, and foregrounds. Seeing lines and patterns through the lens.

This dahlia image is pretty much straight out of camera. It took my breath away.

Because God has been teaching me to see from abundance instead of lack, I could capture the hidden dance of this flower.

How are you seeing? Do you struggle with seeing more lack than abundance?

Try this exercise:

Every morning ask Jesus about His favorite part of yesterday. If you’re like me, it’ll begin to shift things inside and you’ll find abundance of joy and peace in hidden places.

Learning to see in a new way

Flowers in a Wine Glass

Learning to see in a new way

This still life set up happened accidentally.

In my life that hasn’t happened much, but it is happening more and more. Like sneaky little drops of joy that drip from heaven and land like kisses.

I asked for it. I asked God to help me see life in a new way.

He is.

Every day.

And all I do is keep my eyes open.

Questions for seeing in new ways

  • What other types of transparent containers could I use?

  • What other things could I put in glass containers?

  • Where else could I place the flowers?

I would love to hear your thoughts on seeing in new ways!
